Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition ( IHMCT&AN), Hajipur has come into existence in the year 1997 after upgradation of earlier Food Craft Institute, Patna (Society) which was set up in 1982 by Department of Tourism under Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Govt. of India.

Food Craft Institute was managed by the Govt. of India till 1987 and onwards 1987 it was handed over to Govt. of Bihar, for further operation. Food Craft Institute was a registered Society under the Society Registration Act. (1860)

Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition (IHMCT&AN), Hajipur is an autonomous body and is a Registered Society (Reg. no. 109/79-80) under the Society Registration Act (1860) .Its affairs are looked after by Board of Governors. The institute like rest of the 28 institutes in the country is jointly sponsored by the Government of India (under Ministry of Tourism) and the Govt. of Bihar (under Department of Tourism) .IHM , Hajipur is academically Affiliated to National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Noida.

The Institute is financed by Govt. of India, Ministry of Tourism in shape of grant-in-aid for meeting capital nature of expenditure (equpments, furniture & fixture and books) as well as non recurring expenditure. The institute, however, no longer depends on grant in aid from Govt. of India in respect of net revenue expenditure (NRE) as being Self Reliant for the past 2-3 financial years.

Students are engeged in well established hospitality industries, backed by national and international organisations, such as IATA, Ministry of Tourism and Hotel chains.

The Institute having its own large & specious campus at Ramashish chowk, opposite Govt. Circuit House, Hazipur, Vaishali is equipped with five training kitchens, one bakery lab, one confectionary lab, one training restaurant, one conference hall, four model guest rooms, one laundry, one computer lab, one well stocked library, student dining hall, a number of lecturer halls etc. The building of the institute has been constructed by C.P.W.D.
